Case Study 04

Organizational Snapshot

Sector: Land conservation & environmental stewardship
Audience: County-wide communities, donors, environmental partners
Size: Established nonprofit with staff, board, and public presence
Key Challenge: Cultural harm + lack of credibility with marginalized communitie

The Challenge

The organization faced internal conflict after harmful and inappropriate comments from its executive leadership damaged trust with staff — especially staff members from marginalized backgrounds. At the same time, they needed to expand programs into underserved communities but lacked meaningful relationships or a track record of engagement. Leadership knew change was necessary but felt unsure how to respond or where to begin.

Our Approach

We led a deep culture and leadership engagement process designed to repair trust, strengthen understanding, and build a pathway toward authentic inclusion. Through facilitated conversations, listening sessions, and equity education, we helped board and executive leadership understand the real impact of harmful language and outdated practices. We guided tough, direct—but supported—conversations that created accountability and clarity. In parallel, we helped the organization examine its role in advancing equity within conservation work, identifying ways to build genuine relationships with Black and Brown communities and shift from a charity mindset to a partnership mindset. The work grounded change from the inside out.

Impact

Staff gained a voice and saw real changes in how leadership communicates, listens, and responds. The organization rebuilt trust internally, aligned on equity as a core value, and developed a clear plan for deeper community engagement. With new confidence and cultural awareness, they began building partnerships with historically excluded communities — opening the door to relevant programming and new funding opportunities. The path forward is more honest, more inclusive, and more connected to the people their mission must serve.

“Your leadership helped us face difficult truths with compassion and courage. Today we are stronger, more aware, and more committed to serving our whole community.”
